Buying a Pre-Owned Yacht

So you’ve decided to buy a pre-owned boat, and you’re wondering how to begin. Whether you’ve owned boats before or you’re buying for the first time, Farallone Yacht Sales can smooth the process and help you find the boat that is just right for you. The Offer Process
Farallone Yacht Sales will partner with you as you make your offer. There are many negotiating factors to consider, including price, financing, terms, date of possession and often the inclusion or exclusion of repairs and furnishings or equipment that may arise in surveys. You’ll find our objective, experienced presence a big help when it comes to sorting it all out, preparing your purchase agreement, or countering a seller and managing the escrow.
  • Unlike many brokers, with Farallone, all you need is a completed and signed offer form and a fully refundable $2000 check or cash. This allows us to present an offer on your behalf to the seller.
  • Offers are always contingent upon a successful test sail and surveys. They may also be contingent upon items such as financing or a longer close than usual, but that’s where we come in. We can help you put together your offer, and then we’ll work hard to present it, keeping the objectives of the seller and the buyer both in mind.
  • We try to keep things moving along in negotiations, generally allowing 3 days for an accepted offer, 21 days for surveys and 10 days to close. The sailing community is a close one. Our goal is always a happy buyer and a happy seller.
Arranging the Test Sail and the Surveys
It is important you know how your new boat will sail so as soon as we have an accepted offer, we arrange a test sail. Once that is completed to your satisfaction, surveys are the next step.
Surveys are a critical part of purchasing a preowned vessel, particularly since a hull survey is almost always required for insurance and financing. At Farallone Yacht Sales, we can advise you throughout the process of evaluating the boat you’ve found.
  • We can provide you with a list of NAMS-certified surveyors if you need one.
  • We’ll make the arrangements at the yard for haul-out and get you estimates for the necessary labor.
  • Our good relationships with our vendors can often secure you very competitive pricing.
Closing the Deal
Title indicates ownership of a vessel and it can be mired in a confusing status of past owners or rights of access. If the vessel is a foreign flagged vessel, set up as a corporation, or existing under any number of other special circumstances, our expertise becomes even more valuable.
Although we don’t do the title and documentation search ourselves, we work with highly qualified individuals who will make that part seamless for you. We’ve sold boats out of the state and out of the country, and we’re very familiar with what it takes to title a boat so you don’t have to worry.
